Jobs for life | adults

Getting a job is an art form, keeping a job can require emotional and spiritual endurance, and we believe none of these are possible without mentors and a community that has your back. If you crave independence and financial freedom, this nationally acclaimed 12-week course will help you get there. Using a Biblically based curriculum, you will learn from Richmond business leaders and pastors. (So much of getting a job is who you know. This is great for networking!) They will help you discover your specific gifts and where you can use them in the Richmond job market. Then if any of this seems overwhelming, know you are given a mentor (some of the most caring people in Richmond!) who are there to walk with you through this process for an entire year! Follow the 100+ Gilpin Court residents who have already taken this step, and see what God can do!

Victory reading | Children

When you look at statistics, it’s overwhelming how much reading can change a child’s life. Researchers have found that most inmates always struggled with reading. If a child can read well they have more chances to lead a healthy and thriving life. Parenting is difficult as it is, much less parenting in Gilpin Court, so we know making the time to read to your child and help them develop these skills is not easy to do every day - as much as you may want to do it. Let us come alongside your child’s reading. Children kindergarten through third grade meet at the Calhoun Center after school 4 days a week to practice reading, be read to themselves, get homework help, and learn about the God who is the reason behind everything we do at STEP - Jesus! We have trusted volunteers from area churches (all with background checks) who help with all of this.

summer enrichment | children

Summer is when education goes down and crime rates go up. Gilpin Court can be a dangerous place for a child. Though school may end, we extend our Victory Reading program through much of the summer, adding some cool activities on top of it. In our Summer Enrichment program your child has the chance to go swimming or try out a hobby like woodworking. Children go on field trips to places like the Science Museum and Shalom Farms. Then all of this includes our favorite week of the year - Vacation Bible School. This is where we do a deep dive into sharing the love of God. All curriculum comes back to practical ways your child can know Jesus loves them and is a living and active God today.

other programs

If you have lived in Gilpin Court for any amount of time you have probably at least heard of some of our other programs - like the Fall Family Festival where we set up outside The Calhoun Center with hot dogs, popcorn, and games every October. We also have an annual Christmas Store that pops up in December, offering parents the opportunity to purchase quality gifts at an affordable price. Occasionally a business gifts us with tickets to a Flying Squirrels baseball game or other special event. Christians throughout Richmond continue to surprise us with their generosity.
